SUNDAY READINGS

------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------
Questions on Sunday's readings for use by discussion groups,
prayer groups, or for individual prayer.
------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------

First Reading
Deuteronomy, Chapter 8, Verses 2-3, 14-16

1. God brought forth water from the flint rock and manna from the “parched and waterless ground.” Compare this with the Eucharist.

2. What kinds of situations require blind trust on your part? With those in mind, discuss this quotation: “He therefore let you be afflicted with hunger, and then fed you with manna.”

Second Reading
1 Corinthians, Chapter 10, Verses 16-17

1. In the Eucharist we are joined both with Christ and with each other in love. What are some of the implications? Are there things that Eucharistic unity would drive out if we let it?

2. Explain in your own words what it means for the many to be one in Christ. How could you and your community be “Eucharist” to each other?

Gospel
John, Chapter 6, Verses 51-58

1. Discuss Aelred R. Rosser’s statement, “Jesus gives us himself in the Eucharist, not divided or in part, but his very self: his life, his being, his force, his soul and divinity.”

2. How did God respond to humankind’s need for manna? How does God respond to your long-range needs for the bread of life? Do you have a need for the Eucharist?
