News alert by the Maximus Group

JUN. 19, 2012 - “What price would you pay for freedom?”

That line opens the synopsis of the epic action movie FOR GREATER GLORY, now in its third week of theatrical release and still drawing many to theaters across the country to witness the true story of Mexico’s Cristero War for religious liberty, which rocked 1920s North America.

That question, however, has real-time relevance – especially this week, which marks the start (on Thursday, June 21) of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Fortnight for Freedom.

“In the Church’s understanding, it is the laity who are the ones who bring about the just and tranquil society,” said Most Rev. William E. Lori, Archbishop of Baltimore and head of the USCCB’s Ad Hoc Committee for Religious Liberty. “It is the laity who are at the forefront of creating what Pope Paul VI called the ‘civilization of love.’”

In a recent story on the Fortnight for Freedom, Catholic News Agency/EWTN News reported Archbishop Lori’s emphasis that one of the main objectives of the two-week event is “to make sure that all of us, but especially our young, understand and accept what the Church teaches on religious liberty, and that we understand and accept gratefully our heritage as Americans.”

Writing for National Review Online, Kathryn Jean Lopez notes that Archbishop Lori told his fellow bishops – meeting recently in Atlanta – “We will not fail.”
